It is common for boxers to try out different methods of weight loss in order to reach the correct weight for the category they are fighting in. Unfortunately many boxers go about this the wrong way and resort to extreme and unhealthy methods of weight loss to do this. Some of these include…

Cutting out carbohydrates and salt – boxers tend to do this three weeks before their fight. It causes them to lose a lot of weight to begin with. What it also does though is hinder the body’s ability to sweat as it starts to retain water rather than lose it. This in unhealthy for the body as balanced water and sodium levels are key to a healthy weight.

Using the sauna to lose water weight – it is common for boxers to take to the sauna a week before their fight to lose water weight. This is a huge disservice to the body as it can increase their chances of being knocked out in the ring. The sauna can cause the body to become dehydrated and as little as 3% dehydration can cause a 30% decrease in performance.

Sweat Suits – this is similar to going into the sauna only the boxer will wear a sweat suit (usually whilst doing cardio exercises) to lose the water weight. The insulating properties of the sweat suit cause you to sweat more than usual when exercising.

Eating disorders – this is unfortunately a reality for many individuals involved in combat sports. When competing in weight divisions it is natural to feel conscious about the body’s weight. When athletes stop eating though they are causing themselves damage and putting their lives at risk.
